After all the big announcements and updates from E3, i decided to put a great 8 list together of my most anticipated games. I have two caveats to this list though. First, I am not including games that have little or no info on them. Sure I am looking forward to the new Mass Effect game and the new Legend of Zelda game, but they aren’t even far enough along to have a real trailer yet. I’m putting Mirror’s Edge, Uncharted 4, and Star Wars Battlefront in that list too. The second is that Battlefield and Call of Duty aren’t being considered for the list either. Those games come out every year and are always pretty good. I don’t anticipate them so much as I just buy them when the come out. That being said… Enjoy the list!
By all accounts the Witcher is an excellent series. The biggest problem is that the first game didn’t come out on consoles and this is the third game in the series. That is what kept me from playing The Witcher 2. Now I say who cares. Looks like a great jumping off point… maybe i’ll try squeeze in a Witcher 2 run through before February, or maybe I’ll just read a couple of wikis either way the graphics and epic fantasy gameplay are just too much to pass up during a time when we are just waiting for next gen games to play.
This looks to be a crazy ambitious game with some of the things they are trying, like mind controlling orcs… but it has something even more appealing than that. We have a super dark Lord of the Rings game. I have long been a fan of Frodo and his quest to destroy the ring.. and the movies did more than just do the books justice. The only thing we have been missing is a great new story set in the same world. While War in the North made steps in that direction, it remained tied to the original story. I would love to see something like what the Knights of the Old Republic games did for the Star Wars franchise happen for the expanded universe for Lord of the Rings.
All of the Rocksteady Batman games have been amazing. While I am a little concerned that the Batmobile may seem forced into the game while the grappling gun/glide mechanic of Arkham City was already pretty much perfected… I am putting my trust in Rocksteady. The gameplay footage looks great, if early. And the graphics should be amazing, the other Arkham games had a great look and it appears that this will be a next gen only game… meaning it wont have to be able to scale down to play on Xbox 360 or PS3.
While I am excited about Destiny, the biggest thing going for is the September release. Also, it looks like a Bungie game. And Bungie has always made excellent multiplayer campaigns. It will be interesting to feel the difference in gameplay from the Halo games. The story looks interesting, but what Bungie has always done best is make enemy AI that are fun to fight.
This is both one of the most looked forward to games as well as the most unsure game for me. The idea of four player Assassin’s Creed sounds amazing, but I wonder how it will play out. With everyone coordinating and stalking prey this should be amazing. My concerns however are two-fold. The first is just finding four Assassin’s Creed players that want to coordinate and not just run a head and try get all the kills. This game seems like online match made teammates would be the worst. My second worry has to do with Assassin’s Creeds huge open worlds. While that has always been a staple of the franchise, I can’t help but worry how that will effect multiplayer. All the best co-op games (Gears of War, Halo, and Left 4 Dead for example) are mostly linear games filled with choke points. Other than that I am not at all concerned. The look and feel of the Assassin’s Creed games has been great throughout the series.
Admittedly, this game fits in with the other games I didn’t list because there wasn’t enough information on… Only a cinematic trailer. Unlike the others though, this was honestly the first I had heard of this game and I’m way too pumped to skip it. Its being done by Crystal Dynamics, the same team that did the Tomb Raider reboot I liked so much. This game is probably more than a year away, but it will undoubtably be added immediately to my collection, and If i let my guard down my wife is likely to try steal it and play it first.
First off, I love the Left 4 Dead games. Evolve is from the studio that actually made the those games. Turtle Rock, not Valve. So this game looks like it is going to have some intense multiplayer matches. I love the idea of basically getting to play the boss in a boss fight against a team of actual players. As with all games that seem to focus so heavily on multi-player I worry about longevity, (as far as I know there is no story mode). That being said I still don’t think I have ever played a Battlefield campaign and have still managed to log plenty of hours with that franchise.
Every time I see anything new for this game I get more and more excited. Futuristic weapons in a super realistic looking war torn New York. Sounds amazing. This also looks like it has a co-op campaign (by now you should know that I’m a big fan of those). It looks like encounters will play out like a Gears of War or Halo game where you will need to take cover, flank, and work as a team.
