8 GREAT POWERS & ABILITIES IN VIDEO GAMES
In this great 8 I decided to make it pretty simple. What are some of the best powers or abilities in gaming? Took keep it fair I stuck with gaming origonals… no Force Powers from a Star Wars game for example. Here is what I came up with.
Mario’s fireball is pretty much the original power up. Sure you got the mushroom and the star first, but it was really all about that flower. From the point in World 1-2 when nabbed that first flower video games where never the same again. While it may not be as flashy or fun to use as some of the others on the list, you have to give credit to the O.G.
In most Final Fantasy games you have to carry a healer on your team all the time, and they are pretty much useless in all the non-boss fights, with one exception… Summons. The best part of those games (when a cut scene was a reward) was watching the cool animation to call in a huge beast to fight for you.
When the first Mortal Kombat rolled around in 92 there was one character that stood out among the rest… The ever cool Sub-Zero. The ability to freeze your opponent then walk right up and blast him with an upper cut made him a fan favorite. As the years went on Sub-Zero added to his freeze repertoire with move such as freezing the ground and an ice sword. When it comes to ninjas, Sub-Zero wins.
While the game itself wasn’t nearly as good as most on this list, the special powers in Prototype are amazing. Think the T1000 with muscle and bones. The protagonist in Prototype is able to create blades and whips out of his body as well as consuming enemies to gain there thoughts, skills, and appearance.
Skyrim is pretty much the fantasy gamers fantasy. Where there are a ton of magic spells you can cast in most Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim takes it a step further with the dragon shouts. Since your created character is dragon born, yep on of your ancestors got it on with a dragon, you are able to speak the magic language of the dragons, and in doing so… cast some pretty bad ass spells. The most infamous of these is probably “Fos Ro Dah” whicj is basically a giant air burst pushing everything away from you.
While I said no Star Wars powers, this is pretty much the cheat to get around that. In Mass Effect your Biotic powers allow you to Charge, Singularity, Pull, Throw, Warp, or Shockwave your opponents. While they are very similar to force powers, they are still awesome. If you have not played the Mass Effect Trilogy you are missing out on one of the biggest, well thought-out, projects in all of gaming. By the third installment the biotic powers run amazingly smooth.
Hacking your own genetic code to be able to shoot electric bolts, fire, freeze blasts, sonic booms, enrage an enemy, or even a swarm of bees from your hands is one of the coolest ideas around. Not only is it super fun, but the cut scene for each transformation is outstanding, and Bioshock takes full advantage of the environments and tools. If you see a group of enemies standing it water, fry them all with an electric bolt. See an enemy standing near a gas leak, ignite it… or you can always just hit someone with your winter blast and shatter them to pieces with your wrench.
While some of the other abilities may be cooler, Crackdown is the best at its progression of your abilities. Strength and Agility are by far the funnest. As you use you powers they grow. That and finding the orbs. At the start of the game you’ll be able to jump a little higher then a normal human. By the time you max out your powers and can pick up an SUV and jump over a 3 story building with it. Crackdown is pretty much the only game that has made collectables fun.
There is my list, please tell me where I went wrong or what your favorites are in the comments section. As a side note, my original list had the electric powers from inFamous on it but my wife reminded me about the Final Fantasy summons and may have gotten violent if I left them off the list.
