8 GREAT VIDEO GAME WEAPONS
While putting the list of the 8 greatest video game weapons together I decided to limit myself to one weapon per game series, otherwise this list would likely be filled solely from the Gears of War and Bulletstorm arsenal. I also decide to go with the weapons only, not special powers… there will be another list for that down the line. I also decided that cool devices, while not actual weapons would be ruled out… Sorry Portal Gun and Pip Boy. I also wanted the weapon to be known for it’s gaming roots… No Lightsabers here. Lastly, I tried to look at how cool the weapon actually is. While Gordon Freeman’s crowbar is iconic, it’s really just a crowbar.
That being said… enjoy my list of 8 GREAT VIDEO GAME WEAPONS.
The Master Sword is probably the most iconic of all the weapons on this list. From the second Zelda game, A Link To The Past, to the Wii’s Skyward Sword you work your tale off to save the princess and all of Hyrule. On your way you will likely be rewarded with the master sword! You will come across it standing in a stone platform of some kind. In the Zelda mythology the master sword is the key to defeating evil. In my personal favorite Zelda game, Link can use the sword to travel back in forth in time.
The main character in the Dead Space series is Isaac Clarke, when we meet him in the first Dead Space game he is a ship systems engineer. A repair mission finds him aboard a ship full of “Necromorphs”. Isaac is force to mow them down, making improvised weapons out of mining tools…chief among them, the plasma cutter. The plasma cutter uses three blue lasers to indicate the cutting plane, then sends a super heated blast to slice anything in its path. This works great considering the way to take down a Necromorph is to take off it’s limbs.
The Energy Sword is a plasma based sword held in shape by a small magnetic force field contained within the base of the weapon. In Halo mythology, the energy sword is the choice weapon of the “Shangheili” or the Elites. It is considered a holy weapon and is only allowed to be used by aristocrats and high ranking Covenant. What makes the energy sword so cool is its power. It can basically kill all but a shielded Spartan in one hit. A strike on a fully shielded Spartan will completely drain his shield leaving him vulnerable for a killing blow.
The Fat Man is basically a shoulder mounted mortar gun that fires a mini-nuke. That’s right, a NUKE! There isn’t much more to it. Use it to take out pretty much anyone or anything you encounter in the game. If your really lucky you may come across the Experimental MIRV. It’s just like the Fat Man, but shoots 8 mini-nukes instead of one…. for all those times when you need 8 nukes at once. In Fallout: New Vegas you can come across “Esther” which is a heavier Fat Man that never jams and is a bit more powerful.
Sorry, no replicas on this one.
In the first instances of the hidden blade the assassin would have to cut off his ring finger both as a place for the blade to emerge and as a show of commitment to the brotherhood of assassins. In later years, Leonardo Da Vinci used a design by Altaïr to alter the hidden blade so you could keep your finger; however, the Assassins still required you to brand your ring finger. The hidden blade works great for stealth kills; however, I always wondered how inconspicuous you really looked loaded down with a sword and a bunch of throwing knives.
The Blades of Chaos were forged by Ares, the god of war, in the underworld. The blades themselves are imbued with fire and attached to chains. When Kratos pledged himself to Ares he was gifted the blades of chaos, but with the penalty that the chains were seared into his skin to remind him of the pledge he made to the god.
Throughout the series Kratos would receive many very cool weapons, but none better then the famous chain blades.
This was by far the hardest game to choose jus one weapon from. Pretty much every “gun” is amazing with both it’s primary and alternate firing mode. If you haven’t played this game, you are really missing out. In the end I went with the Energy Leash, a enery whip that can both grab and pull enemies as well as “thump” them into the air In the game it is a instinct based technology, highly illegal, that bonds cybernetically with its user. It is the piece of tech that ties all the best skillshot combos together, and it is still a weapon. Don’t believe me? Try the Slam Dunk where you send the enemies flying into the air then slam them down with the leash.
Again no replica for this one, that being said without the energy whip its basically just a fingerless glove with a watch on it. Feel free to create your own.
Gears of War was another tough one to choose just one from while the Torque Bow is awesome The Hammer of Dawn would have likely been number two one my list. That being said, the number one video game weapon is the Lancer. How much more perfect could a marriage be than between a fully auto assault rifle and a chainsaw. The first time you get caught messing up your active reload with a locust right in your face and you rev up the chainsaw and just start cutting, you know that the Lancer is video games best weapon.
That concludes my list of gaming’s best weapons. Please tell me which ones are your favorites in the comments.
