Batman V Superman is so close to being really good, but there is just too much going on. The story is all over the place, the problem is they decided to try smash two famous comic stories into the movie, as well as a Batman origin, all while trying to kick off the DC Justice League world. I’m not sure who thought that was a good idea, but they were wrong. The story is never able to establish a flow, instead we are left with a series of beautifully shot good moments within a mess of a plot.
There will be spoilers!
Zack Snyder shoots an excellent movie. It is a visual treat, and with a good editor there may have been two good movies here. Batman v Superman from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns comic and Mike Carlin’s Death of Superman story-line. The two just don’t work enough together. A lot of the story problems stem from trying to force these two separate stories into one. Jesse Eisenberg is terrible as Lex Luthor, but I don’t think it is 100% his fault. Snyder tried to use Luther to tie everything together so instead of being a genius criminal he comes off as a lunatic… though the way Eisenberg played it didn’t help matters either. I also feel like Snyder should have told him that it was a bad idea.
The movie spends a lot of time focusing on Affleck’s Batman. So much so that the SuperMan story-line seems throw away until the very end, at which point is has lost it’s punch. Ben Affleck is good as Batman, you’ll need to be okay with the fact that Snyder has made him a murderer, and I was. (Those that got mad when Superman killed Zodd in the Man Of Steel probably hated this.) This Batman uses guns. He blows up cars. He is so ruthless that Superman feels he need’s to stop him. The only problems I had with the Batman story-lines were the over use of the dream sequence and the awful way they chose to end the Batman and Superman fight.
I stated previously that Superman never really got his story. Either that or it just wasn’t very good. The world is trying to decide if Superman is a help or a menace. It seems people were upset when he saved the world because too many things got broken in the process. That leaves us with a Superman who lacks confidence in his choices while at the same time not trusting humanity. I still like Henry Cavill in the role, but they didn’t give him much to work with.
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was great in the little bit she was in the movie. Her story development was almost worthless, and the way they used her to introduce the Justice League was terrible, but she held her own in the big end fight. I am very excited to see what they do with her movie. I am very upset that they had her in the previews. Marketing ruined what could have been an awesome surprise.
Batman decides that he needs to stop Superman. Superman decides that he needs to stop Batman. Somehow and for some reason this is all really Lex Luther’s plan and he has been manipulating them both. To make sure they fight he tricks Lois into confronting him and kidnaps Superman’s mom. (At this point you have to be okay with Superman being able to hear Lois in trouble across the world in Africa earlier in the movie, but not being able to hear his Mom being kidnapped in Kansas or being held in the same city that Superman is in, he needs Batman to find her.) At this point Superman has to kill Batman or Lex will kill Ma Kent. Superman goes to talk it over with or kill Batman as need be. Batman does’t want to talk so they fight. Meanwhile, in case this plan doesn’t work Lex has been using the crashed cryptonian spaceship to somehow make Doomsday. A sort of monster that is practically unstoppable. Superman and Batman stop fighting because they realize they both love their Moms who happen to share the same first name. Batman saves Superman’s mom, then all 3 of the heroes team up to fight Doomsday. They kill him, but only because Superman stabs him with a cryptonite spear… leaving him too weak to survive being stabbed by Doomsday. Maybe he should have let Batman or Wonder Woman stab him… just saying. They bury Superman, but surprise! He is just mostly dead and will be back for the next movie.
Now lets talk about the good stuff. The action scenes are great. Batman chasing down a truck in the Bat-Mobile is great. The fight between Superman and Batman looks amazing. All three of the main super heroes played their role well so there is lots of hope for better stories. Wonder Woman was great in the Doomsday fight, although Doomsday himself was maybe a little to much CGI lightning. Batman takes out a room full of Lex’s henchmen.
All said, I still feel like fans should go watch this movie. The effects are great, and it has it’s moments. Just don’t hope for a tight story.
