Black Sails is the Starz channel’s answer to Game of Thrones… and while not quite as good, it was way better than I expected. Black Sails is billed as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and tells of the earlier years of Captain Flint and Jon Silver as well as a fictionalized story of Nassau during the “Golden Age” of piracy. Flint and his crew’s attempt to track down a Spanish treasure ship with the help of Eleanor Guthrie, a young woman who largely runs the on shore operations on the pirate island. In addition to hunting the ship, they are also attempting to assure the survival and long term legitimacy of New Providence Island. The show also features many of histories most infamous pirates… Charles Vane, Captain Hornigold, Ned Low, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny. Many of which I am sure are familiar to Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag players.
The Nassau setting is a gorgeous contrast to the murder, prostitutions, and piracy the story is based on. This is definitely a show intended for and adult audience, featuring plenty of blood, guts and enough nudity to make Game of Thrones seem prudish.
The overall story is excellent leading to a really fun show that I’m sure would be a huge hit were it on HBO instead of Starz. The only things bringing the score down are that the writing can be slightly slower paced at times and some of the acting is at a level not quite equal to the very best shows out there.
