The second Plant of the Apes series reboot has been a huge sucess. First Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and now Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have managed to far exceeded expectations. While the story is great, the real star of the show has to be the acting of Andy Serkis and Tony Kebbell as Caesar and Koba. The motion capture combined with the CGI is out of this world, by far the best to date.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes starts with a quick montage explaining how humans are all but wiped out by the “Simian Flu”, an epidemic created by the same drug that caused the Apes to gain intelligence in the first movie. The story takes place 10 years later in what has turned into a post apocalypse San Francisco and the spreading Redwood forest. The demolished and overgrown San Francisco is both beautiful and terrifying. The story is basically that of two untrusting groups trying to work together to avoid a fight over land and resources… while within the two factions some think it would be wise to strike first and take what they want.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is an action packed summer block buster that is able to maintain focus on great character drama as well as over the top excitement. This is a must see movie for everyone, not just sci-fi fans.
