I have recently gotten back into comics in a pretty big way… and it all started with The Walking Dead books by Robert Kirkman. These books are expertly illustrated by Charlie Adlard, Cliff Rathburn, and Tony Moore. Obviously, this is the source material for AMC’s The Walking Dead television show, and is a must read for fans. The show follows the source close enough to hit most of the same story beats, but is different enough to make the book well worth reading. Some things are created just for the show, while others large book sections were omitted. You will also find while a lot of the characters are the same you’ll likely have much different feelings towards characters in the book. Personally, I watched the show first and was progressively less and less of a fan of Andrea as the seasons went on. In the books she is one of my favorite characters.
The perfect introduction to this series is The Walking Dead Compendium One. It contains the first 48 issues of the comic, which coincidentally will take you to the exact point where the show left off at the season 4 break. So read them quick for a sort of a refresher before the season kicks back off in February.
